How creative are you?

Creativity is the ability to generate novel and useful ideas, products, or solutions. It is often considered a valuable skill in many domains, such as art, science, business, and education. But how can we measure creativity? And how can we improve it?

One way to assess creativity is to use divergent thinking tests, which ask people to generate as many different responses as possible to a given problem or prompt. For example, how many uses can you think of for a paper clip? A creative person would be able to come up with many original and diverse answers, such as a bookmark, a lock pick, a sculpture, or a fishing hook.

Another way to evaluate creativity is to use convergent thinking tests, which ask people to find the best or most correct answer to a problem that has one or few solutions. For example, what word can be formed by rearranging the letters in “RACE”? A creative person would be able to quickly identify the word “CARE”, which is not obvious at first glance.

Both divergent and convergent thinking are important aspects of creativity, but they are not enough. Creativity also requires motivation, persistence, curiosity, and openness to new experiences. These factors can help us overcome the challenges and obstacles that we may face in our creative endeavors.

So how can we enhance our creativity? There are many strategies and techniques that can help us boost our creative potential, such as:

  • Brainstorming: generating as many ideas as possible without judging or filtering them.
  • Incubation: letting our subconscious mind work on a problem while we do something else.
  • Analogies: finding similarities or connections between seemingly unrelated concepts or domains.
  • Constraints: imposing limitations or rules that force us to think differently or more creatively.
  • Feedback: seeking constructive criticism or suggestions from others who can offer new perspectives or insights.

Creativity is not a fixed trait that we are born with or without. It is a skill that we can develop and improve with practice and effort. By applying these strategies and techniques, we can unleash our creative potential and achieve our goals. How creative are you?
